A helicopter flight is the only way to see much of Hawaii: hidden waterfalls, sea cliffs and valleys no road reaches. One of the first choices you’ll make is whether to fly with the doors on or off. Here’s how they compare.
Doors-on helicopter tours
Most Hawaii helicopter tours fly with enclosed cabins and large windows. Many use models designed for sightseeing, with wide windows and quieter cabins.
- More comfortable, with no wind and less noise
- Warmer at altitude
- Fewer restrictions on clothing and personal items
- Better for first-time flyers, families and anyone nervous about heights
The trade-off: window reflections and glare can affect photos, especially from the middle seats.
Doors-off helicopter tours
With the doors removed, nothing stands between you and the view. You’ll feel the wind, hear the waterfalls and see straight down into valleys.
- Unobstructed, reflection-free photos
- A more intense, adventurous experience
- Better for photographers and thrill-seekers
The trade-offs: it’s louder, windier and cooler, and operators enforce strict safety rules on loose items.
Rules to expect on doors-off flights
Rules vary by operator, but on Oahu doors-off flights they commonly include:
- Weigh-in at check-in. Seats are assigned by weight for balance, and some seats have individual weight limits.
- No loose items. Hats and scarves aren’t allowed; long hair should be tied back.
- Phones and cameras must be tethered with an approved lanyard. Selfie sticks and gimbals are typically banned.
- Closed-toe shoes that won’t slip off.
- Minimum age, often around 10 years, with younger teens seated next to an adult.
What to wear
- Dark clothing to reduce window reflections on doors-on flights
- A light jacket or sweatshirt; it gets cool at altitude, especially with doors off
- Secure closed-toe shoes
- Sunglasses (with a strap for doors-off)
Which island is best for a helicopter tour?
- Oahu: Waikiki, Diamond Head, Sacred Falls and the North Shore. Try the 50-minute doors-off adventure or the 45-minute Hidden Oahu flight.
- Big Island: active volcanic landscapes and waterfalls, such as the Circle of Fire & Waterfalls tour.
- Maui: West Maui valleys and Molokai sea cliffs on the West Maui & Molokai flight, or Hana and Haleakala.
- Kauai: the Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon on the Kauai helicopter eco adventure.
Our recommendation
If photos are your priority and you’re comfortable with wind and noise, go doors-off. If it’s your first flight, you’re traveling with kids, or comfort matters most, choose doors-on. Either way, book early in your trip in case weather forces a reschedule. See all our Hawaii helicopter tours or call (808) 824-3995.
