Kualoa Ranch Oahu: Tours, Movie Sites & How to Choose

Stunning Views of Oahu at Kualoa Ranch

Spread across roughly 4,000 acres of windward Oahu, Kualoa Ranch is one of the most dramatic landscapes in Hawaii: emerald valley walls, open pastures, a private stretch of coastline and views across to Mokoliʻi Island. It’s also one of Hollywood’s favorite backdrops. Here’s how to choose the right Kualoa Ranch experience for your trip.

Why Kualoa Ranch is worth the trip

Kualoa sits in Kaʻaʻawa Valley on the northeast side of Oahu, a scenic drive from Waikiki along the windward coast. The ranch is still a working cattle ranch, and it’s also a place of deep cultural significance in Hawaiian history. Most visitors come for one (or more) of three things: famous movie locations, outdoor adventure, and the scenery itself.

Famous movies filmed at Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa has hosted hundreds of film and TV productions. Movie fans will recognize valleys and ridgelines from Jurassic Park and the Jurassic World films, Kong: Skull Island, Jumanji, 50 First Dates and Godzilla. Several tours stop at original filming sites, with props and photo spots along the way.

Kualoa Ranch tours compared

Movie sites & ranch tours

A relaxed, guided ride through the valleys with stops at famous filming locations. Best for families with younger kids, first-time visitors and anyone who wants the scenery without the adrenaline.

ATV and UTV tours

Drive yourself through the backcountry on rugged trails, with stops at movie sites and lookout points. Expect dust and mud; wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Choose a one-hour ATV tour for a taste, or the two-hour ATV tour to go deeper into the valley.

Horseback riding

Fitting for a working ranch: guided trail rides through Kaʻaʻawa Valley at a walking pace, suitable for beginners. Book a one-hour ride or the longer two-hour horseback adventure.

Zipline and treetop canopy

The Kualoa Ranch zipline tour runs about three hours at the top of Kaʻaʻawa Valley, with seven tandem lines from roughly 200 feet to a quarter mile long and two suspension bridges. Guides share Hawaiian legends and local plant lore between lines. Weight limits apply, starting at a 70 lb minimum.

Ocean and garden tours

A gentler option: a catamaran ride on Kāneʻohe Bay, a visit to the ancient Molii fishpond and tropical gardens. Ideal if you want culture and scenery without the bumps.

Tips before you go

  • Book ahead. Popular tours sell out, especially weekends and summer.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes for ATV, horseback and zipline tours.
  • Check age and weight limits for your activity when booking; they vary by tour.
  • Bring a light layer, sunscreen and water. Windward weather changes quickly and short showers are common.
  • Plan a full morning or day. Packages with transportation usually pick up early from Waikiki and return mid-afternoon.
