USS Missouri Battleship

You can call it Missouri, or Mighty Mo, but whatever name you address this ship by, she will always remain an international symbol of strength, prowess, and liberty. The massive turrets of the USS Missouri Battleship were practically unmatched during its years of service in the Second World War. Missouri also holds a special place in US military history by being the final US battleship to ever be constructed. Mighty Mo was donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association in 1998 and now looks over the USS Arizona Memorial at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

History

It took three years to complete construction of the USS Missouri, built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard from January 1941 to 1944. Mighty Mo fought in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, shelled the Japanese home islands, and served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. Although decommissioned in 1955, the Missouri was later reinstated from 1984 to 1992, when it aided attacks during Operation Desert Storm.

• How long we stop here on tour: 30 minute guided tour of the deck by a battleship expert., followed by 45 minutes to 1 hour to explore the ship, including other decks and living quarters.

• Insider Tip: Be sure to journey up to the Captian's deck for a picture sitting in the Captain's chair, steering the massive battleship.
• Fun Fact: President Harry Truman joined the crew in September 1948, sailing from Rio De Janeiro to Norfolk, VA. During his cruise, President Truman dined with the sailors and temporarily lifted the NAVY's ban on drinking hard liquor so he could enjoy his favorite bourbon during the voyage.
• What To Expect: A 30 minute guided tour of the battleship's deck, with stops at many historic points, including the Surrender Deck where the Japanese formally surrendered World War II.
• Pop Culture: The highly anticipated 2012 release 'Battleship' was filmed around Oahu, including much filming on board the Mighty Mo.
