You can call it Missouri, or Mighty Mo, but whatever name you address this ship by, she will always remain an international symbol of strength, prowess, and liberty. The massive turrets of the
USS Missouri Battleship were practically unmatched during its years of service in the Second World War. Missouri also holds a special place in US military history by being the final US battleship to ever be constructed. Mighty Mo was donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association in 1998 and now looks over the
USS Arizona Memorial at the
Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.
History
It took three years to complete construction of the USS Missouri, built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard from January 1941 to 1944. Mighty Mo fought in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, shelled the Japanese home islands, and served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. Although decommissioned in 1955, the Missouri was later reinstated from 1984 to 1992, when it aided attacks during Operation Desert Storm.
