What's this attraction about?
Historic, picturesque and inspiring all-in-one, the Tunnel of Trees on Kauai leads the way along Highway 520 to Poipu Beach. Tall eucalyptus trees line Maluhia Road near Koloa, creating a dense, green corridor toward South Shore Kauai. In 1992, when Hurricane Iniki hit Kauai and the rest of Hawaii, the canopy of the Tunnel of Trees was damaged. Today, the trees have once again flourished and create a complete tunnel with closed top.
History
Over a century ago, Scottish businessman and cattle rancher Walter Duncan McBryde donated over 500 eucalyptus trees from his estate for the beautification of Maluhia Road. McBryde co-founded the McBryde Sugar Company, managed the Kauai Pineapple Company, and also donated Kukuiolono Park to Kauai residents. Today, McBryde is buried near the 8th hole of Kukuiolono Golf Course. Two hurricanes have damaged the tree tunnel, one in 1982 and another in 1992. The trees have since regrown to a full state.
