About Thurston Lava Tube

An easy, enjoyable walk through quiet rainforests takes you to the entrance of the Thurston Lava Tube, which continues to awe every visitor with its tranquil, almost eerie presence at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Down an easy trail lined with lush ferns and tropical trees, the lava tube—now hundreds of years old—invites visitors with comfortable lighting that preserves the mood of this volcanic land formation. History

A conduit of fast-moving lava created the Thurston lava tube. When the outer layers of the lava tube began to harden, and the interior lava flow diminished, what was left was an underground tunnel formed exclusively by a lava flow.
