Sunset Beach

Of all the famous North Shore Beaches, Sunset Beach stands out as an inviting, family friendly place to spend the day. One of the longest strips of sand on the North Shore, Sunset Beach is the perfect place to watch the sun fade over the horizon. But families should be wary in the winter: Sunset Beach turns into a pro-level surfing beach November through March, with waves reaching heights of 25 feet! Throughout the year, Sunset Beach combines just the right amount of beautiful sand, clear waters, relaxing palm trees and the friendly, rural community known as Haleiwa Town. Nearby beaches include Waimea Bay and Banzai Pipeline.

History

As early as 1200 A.D., ancient Hawaiians dared to ride these swells. In the 1930s, recorded history shows us the first surfing pros pioneering these tricky waters. By the 1960s, Sunset was the world’s most famous beach, with people travelling from all over the globe to surf here. Although its popularity has slipped in recent decades for ground-breaking surfing, Sunset Beach continues to remain a favorite for travelers and Hawaii residents.
