About South Shore Oahu

Although it's shores are not as famous as the North Shore Beaches, South Shore Oahu offers some of the most scenic locations on the island. Driving along Kalanianaole Highway from Diamond Head Crater to Waimanalo Beach Park, a variety of serene surf to severe wave breaks can be found. Sandy Beach Park is notorious for its challenging surf! And then there’s Hanauma Bay, Makapu'u Lookout, and the Halona Blowhole—three sites that offer spectacular views of Oahu’s southern coastline and the blue Pacific Ocean. Take in unique, breathtaking ocean scenery on South Shore Oahu!

History

South Shore Oahu is robust with volcanic landmarks, natural ocean formations, world-class beaches and scenic drives. Diamond Head, created over 150,000 years ago, saddles the far end of Waikiki Beach. At the eastern tip of Oahu is Makapu'u Lookout, featuring the Makapu'u Lighthouse, built in the early 1900s. Halona Blowhole was formed by ancient lava tubes and sprays ocean water dozens of feet into the air. Sandy Beach Park became popular in the mid-1900s but really caught on with body surfers in the 1970s.
