Downtown Honolulu near Punahou School is home to some of the significant sites that played a role in Barack Obama’s early years. On the 10th floor of an apartment building near Punahou Street is where Obama lived during his childhood in Hawaii. There’s his high school, Punahou School, with fellow alumni Kelly Preston, Michelle Wie, and the founder of eBay, Pierre Omidyar. And just around the corner is the hospital Obama was born. Plus, the Baskin-Robbins tucked just off King Street near Kalakaua Avenue is where Obama spent a summer scooping ice cream as his first job.

History

Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961. He is the first Hawaii-born US President and also the first African-American to hold office. His time spent growing up in Hawaii left an impression on him, Obama once said: "The opportunity that Hawaii offered—to experience a variety of cultures in a climate of mutual respect—became an integral part of my world view, and a basis for the values that I hold most dear." The Obama family visits Hawaii as often as possible.
