Olivine Pools

The Olivine Pools are a series of small pools located along the rocky coast of the Western Maui Mountains. There are no sandy beaches here, just the beautifully colored water filling the pools, and lots of rough, jagged lava rock.

History

The pools get their green coloring from a semi-precious gem called Olivine which lines the rocks in the pools. The clear water picks up the green color making the pools appear be green.

• Insider Tip: The waves in this area can be extremely dangerous! If you see waves breaking over the rocks and into the pools you should not enter the pools for any reason. Always be alert as conditions can change rapidly. Arrive early as crowds do form at the pools, and lotions and oils worn on skin may harm sea

• What To Expect: Expect a crowd; if you arrive early you might get lucky. The path is made up of lava rock and tough shoes are necessity. Parking lot is located at mile marker number 16 on Kahekili Highway.
