Ohe’o Gulch Pools (7 Sacred Pools) Hawaii

What's this attraction about?

Water flows graciously through a series of tranquil pools somewhere on the southern slopes of Mt. Haleakala, near the Maui's coastline. Ohe’o Gulch Pools (7 Sacred Pools) is a popular destination for locals and tourists traveling the Hana Highway. Everyone agrees that the serene setting of Ohe’o Gulch lends a peaceful feeling to everyone who visits. Surrounded by lush green forest, the pools actually have no spiritual or religious ties. In fact, Hawaiians believed all waters to be sacred. (Photo: blipsman/Flickr)

History

In the 1940s a publicity campaign was created to bring tourists to Hana by calling the Ohe’o Gulch Pools “Seven Sacred Pools”. The land where the Seven Sacred Pools is situated was donated to the Haleakala National Park system so that the pools would be more easily accessible and to the public. The mountain pools and waterfalls are playgrounds for locals and tourists alike. There is hiking, historical sites, "cliff" jumping, pool swimming, and people watching.
