Home to some of the best surf spots—and the best surfers on the planet, Oahu features a string of sandy beaches along the North Shore:
Waimea Bay,
Sunset Beach, and Ehukai, better know as the
Banzai Pipeline, and
Laniakea Beach (Turtle Beach). Most every beachfront is home to a major surfing competition in the winter months, hosted by international surf companies. The rural towns of the North Shore include
Haleiwa Town, Waialua, Pupukea and Kahuku.
North Shore is also home to cattle ranches, agricultural fields, cultural attractions, polo fields and much more! Don't forget to check out
La'ie Point,
Kualoa Ranch,
Tropical Farms and the
Byodo-In Temple.
History
The North Shore features just one large commercial hotel, the Turtle Bay Resort, featured prominently in the popular movie 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall.' However, there has been little change to the look and feel of the district’s rural towns.
Haleiwa Town, with a population of about 3,000, was founded in 1832 by Protestant missionaries. Haleiwa and its neighboring towns saw a boost in sugar cane production when Westerners flocked north to build mills, plant cane fields and employ immigrants of all ethnic backgrounds. North Shore’s multi-ethnic culture still remains today.
