Makapu'u Lookout

Makapu'u Lookout Hawaii

About Makapu'u Lookout

At the end of the Makapu'u trail is a prominent lighthouse that signals from Oahu’s eastern shores over the Pacific. During the winter, whales can be seen dancing off in the distance. The Makapu'u Lookout, located before the trails leading out to the point, offer gorgeous views to offshore islands like Rabbit Island, plus South Shore Oahu’s coastline and deep blue ocean waters.

History

The famous Makapu'u Point Lighthouse nearby was built in 1909. In 1974 the lighthouse was automated and the keeper’s quarters were removed in 1987. Access to the lighthouse is closed to the public.
