About Honolulu Museum of Art
The Honolulu Museum of Art, which recently changed its name from the Honolulu Academy of Arts, is the largest private presenter of visual arts in Hawaii. The museum opened in 1927, and since then has grown to include an internationally recognized collection of more than 50,000 works. The Museum has a monthly party dedicated to exploring art, ARTafterDARK runs from January through October from 6 to 9 pm.
History
As her husband’s career began to prosper and their art collection grew Anna Rice Cooke began thinking about opening an art museum, and the Honolulu Museum of Arts was founded in 1927. In 2011 the Contemporary Museum gifted its assets and collections to the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and in 2012 the Contemporary Museum and Honolulu Academy of Art joined together to form the Honolulu Museum of Art.
