As you travel the
Hana Highway on your way to
Hana Town, you'll find
Hana Bay at the easternmost point of Maui. This striking black sand beach characterized by calm waters is exactly why people say “Maui No Ka Oi”, or Maui is the Best. With coral reefs that keep dangerous shore breaks at ‘bay’, these gentle waters are ideal for families and canoe racing. In the afternoons, you’ll likely catch the Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Club in action! Snorkeling is also a popular pastime here, where the marine life is colorful and abundant. History
In the early 1900s, Ka’uiki Head Lighthouse was built at the edge of
Hana Bay. Nearby is Hana Pier, one of the few piers in Hana where fishing is abundant. The pier was closed after sustaining damage from winter swells. In 1946, a tsunami hit Maui. One of the highest flood heights, recorded at 28 feet, hit
Hana Bay.
