About Halona Blowhole

Thousands of years ago, molten lava tubes from volcanic eruptions formed the Halona Blowhole. Today, this spectacular natural formation on South Shore Oahu wows its audiences when crashing waves push through the lava tubes, causing water to spray as high as 30 feet into the air In the winter months, this is the perfect spot to see humpback whales in the winter months.

History

Mother Nature created this rock formation thousands of years ago. Fast forward to the 21st century and new warning signs were installed to prevent tourists and residents from going too close to the blowhole. Most, not all, follow the advisories on these signs.

  • How long we stop here on tour: Generally about 10-15 minutes, time permitting.
  • Location: Scenic Lookout near Hanauma Bay, South Shore Oahu
  • Amenities: No amenities at this scenic lookout.
  • Insider Tip: To the right of the scenic lookout is Halona Cove, a secluded beach. To the left of the lookout is Sandy Beach, a popular South Shore surf and boogie board beach, and one of the best places on the island to fly a kite.
  • Fun Fact: Kalanianaole Highway (Route 72) was one of Oahu’s main routes before the Interstate Highways were built.
  • What To Expect: On a clear day you can see Molokai and Lanai from the lookout.
  • Pop Culture: The famous love scene between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr in From Here to Eternity was filmed at the small beach cove to the right of Halona Blowhole.
