About Diamond Head Lighthouse

Located at the base of Diamond Head Crater and a short distance from Waikiki Beach, the Diamond Head Lighthouse is a fully-functioning lighthouse, standing 55-feet high and 147-feet above sea level on the lower slopes of Diamond Head. The light from the Diamond Head Lighthouse projects 18-miles out to sea!

History

The version of the lighthouse that is seen from the base of Diamond Head Crater is actually the second Diamond Head Lighthouse. The original was built in 1899, and the original Fresnel lens is still used by lighthouse #2. In 1917, the current lighthouse was built and has been in use ever since.

Facts & Trivia

  • Location: On the lower slopes of Diamond Head Crater. Follow Kalakaua Ave. past Kapiolani Park and through the neighborhood. Hang a right on Diamond Head Rd. and pull over at the large parking area. The lighthouse is off to the right and can be seen from the road.
  • Insider Tip: Public access to the lighthouse is off-limits; the lighthouse is the residence of the 14th Coast Guard District Commander.
  • Fun Fact: The Fresnel lens is one bright light, emitting the same light intensity as 60,000 candles!
  • What To Expect: Travelers enjoying the sites, Diamond Head above, surfers making their way down the paths, and cyclists and joggers using Diamond Had Rd. for a good workout.
  • Pop Culture: The lighthouse was featured on a United States postage stamp in June 2007.
