Pearl Harbor Tours
The most significant event in Oahu's history occurred on December 7, 1941,
the "day that will live in infamy." That morning, a Japanese force of more than
400 airplanes attacked the U.S. naval base in Pearl Harbor, killing 2,400 people
and kick-starting America's entrance into World War II. This attack on Pearl
Harbor infuriated America, and galvanized the country into action: and the U.S.
immediately entered the war, putting a great deal of effort into destroying the
Japanese military. Although the losses at Pearl Harbor Hawaii proved
devastating, the U.S. fleet soon recovered, and took the battle to the Japanese
Combined Fleet, eventually destroying it utterly.
Among the first casualties of the attack on Pearl Harbor Oahu was the battleship
USS Arizona; many of the 1,177 crewmen went down with the ship, and remain there
today. Few things in life or more moving than a visit to the USS Arizona
Memorial, which is an experience no American should ever miss.
