You'll never forget a flight over this green jewel in the Pacific, with
its lush vegetation, rugged canyons, secret beaches and tall waterfalls.
Description
This 60-minute flight begins at the historic Lihue Airport and takes you
deep into a forbidding but beautiful world of high, rugged mountains,
tall sea cliffs, pristine beaches, and volcanic badlands. The lush
Hanalei Valley is your first destination, followed (weather permitting)
by the wettest place on Earth: Mount Waialeale, where 480 inches of rain
falls a year, and cool tropical waterfalls crash 2,000 feet to the rocks
below. You'll see old sugar plantations at Lihue, as well as working
cattle ranches and TV's ,Fantasy Island. waterfall -- known locally as
Wailua Falls.
The rock formation called the "Sleeping Giant" preludes another famous
waterfall, Jurassic Park's Manawaipuni Falls, which graces the Hanapepe
Valley. Next on the agenda is Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the
Pacific: a half-mile deep, ten mile long hole in the ground that
dramatically illustrates what happens when 40 feet of water a year flows
off the top of a high mountain. Waimea Bay, at the base of the canyon,
marks the infamous Captain Cook's first landing place in 1778. Finally,
you'll fly over Kalalau Valley, the site of an ancient Hawaiian
settlement, where the house foundations and old taro patches are still
clearly visible. As you head for home, you'll pass by Bali Hai, the
setting of the motion picture South Pacific.
