Waikiki Spam Jam Festival
What is the Waikiki Spam Jam?A special treat for anyone visiting Hawaii this weekend, The Waikiki Spam Jam Festival will showcase local restaurants and vendors serving up their own custom take on SPAM for this uniquely Hawaiian celebration. Along with two music stages and other live entertainment, SPAM will have booths set up to offer official SPAM souvenirs! The Waikiki Spam Jam Festival has something to offer people of all ages.
The festivities will kick off at 4:00 P.M. and go to 10:00 P.M. And believe me, it will take most of that time to experience the wide varieties of uses for SPAM. So, you may be asking yourself why is SPAM such an event worthy food in Hawaii?Hawaii’s love for SPAM is a unique obsession. In fact we have our own specially designed label created by a local artist for a Hormel Foods competition .
Spam was first introduced to Hawaii by U.S. soldiers during World War II. Large shipments came to the island almost daily. The locals were quick to adopt this food as part of their own diet because it was cheap, durable, and had a long shelf life. This wartime generation raised their children eating spam, and the cultural inclusion grew from then on. Talk to any local and they’ll gladly share their childhood memories of SPAM sandwiches or SPAM Musubi. SPAM Musubi was created in the 70’s and is one of the most common SPAM-fusions eaten today. As with Musubi, SPAM is easily cooked into many asian dishes. Hawaii’s large asian population has enjoyed using it to add Hawaiian style to classic dishes.
The Waikiki SPAM Jam Festival will also be a benefit for Hawaiian Food Bank. Whether you are here to visit the historic Pearl Harbor Memorial or enjoying a beautiful tour of the entire island, be sure to come out and enjoy this free entertainment and support a good cause!
