Waikiki Hosts Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival
The beginning of July marks the start of the 2nd annual Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival in Waikiki. Each Sunday during July will feature a Hawaiian Steel Guitar master performing on stage at the Waikiki Beach Walk. Presented by the Waikiki Beach Walk and the Outrigger Enterprises Group, the festival is a continuation of Outrigger’s Na Mele No Na Pua Music Heritage Program. With free performances on July 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and the 31st, Waikiki will be seduced by the alluring sounds of Aloha each Sunday, and will be a great thing to do in Oahu. July 3rd kicks off the month-long festival with a show from 5 to 8 pm. Entitled “Stars of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar,” the performance features Alan Akaka & the Islanders with Na Keiki a Ke Kula Mele, Greg Sardinha, and Casey Olsen & the Hiram Olsen Trio. On July 10th, Henry Kaleialoha Allen will fly over from Maui to perform from 5 to 6 pm. Anyone who has heard Allen play his 1973 Fender double-eight Hawaiian steel guitar before can testify that the man is an absolute genius on the kika kila (steel guitar). If you can make it, this is the BEST thing to do in Oahu on July 10th. More details here.
