The Experience of Veterans Day in Hawaii

Celebrating Veterans Day in Hawaii has the possibility of being both unique and memorable as there are so many historic sites to pay respect to the fallen and learn about the service of the living. Honoring men and women for the sacrifice of service is an opportunity for us to recognize and celebrate national heroes. What better place to observe the day of homage than in the state that endured the vicious attack that began World War II.

A terrific opportunity afforded visitors to Oahu this and any Veterans Day is a tour of Pearl Harbor. Visiting Pearl Harbor is a tremendous way to honor veterans of the past and meet current heroes. Discover Hawaii Tours offers several Pearl Harbor tours, some of which include not just the Arizona Memorial Visitor center but also tours of the Battleship Missouri Memorial, the USS Bowfin Submarine or the Pacific Aviation Museum. All five historic World War II sites make up the new national park named the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. Visiting the Park is both emotional and educational as it is made up of museums and artifacts that preserve and interpret the historic War in the Pacific. Seeing the oil still oozing out of the sunken hull of the USS Arizona or standing on the deck of the Missouri Battleship in the exact spot where the instrument of surrender was signed by the Japanese Emperor’s representatives are just two of the extraordinary moments you’ll get to experience on a tour.

Comprehending the events leading up to the “Date of Infamy” and witnessing the path of engagement to peace will renew your respect for not only military veterans, but all people of service. We may always face challenges, conflicts and unexpected obstacles, but civilization will survive  as long as citizens can remain anchored in tolerance and humanity with reverence for those who stand up to protect such values.
