The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing
The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is an annual event that is comprised of three amazing surf competitions along Oahu, Hawaii’s famous North Shore. This year, 2013, marks the 38th year of this prestigious surf competition. Surfers and spectators alike are dazzled by the heart stopping giant waves of the North Shore. Surf spots like Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach get waves up to 40 feet from November to March, Hawaii’s winter season. The Reef Hawaiian Pro kicks off the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, it takes place in Haleiwa at Alii Beach Park from November 12 – 23. It features a “Clash of the Legends of Professional Surfing” heat, where the fans decide who will be competing against each other. Alii Beach surf spot is known for it’s tricky reef and the winner of this competition is a well rounded surfer that can handle themselves in a variety of situations. The second event, the Vans World Cup of Surfing starts November 24 and ends December 6 on world famous Sunset Beach. The waves here during those two weeks are usually giant. During the winter a swell waves can reach anywhere from 15 to 25 feet. This is a favorite stop for our Circle Island Tours because of the crystal clear water and beautiful white sand. The final event, the Billabong Pipeline Masters is scheduled to start December 9 and is composed of nightmares and dreams. Banzai Pipeline is known as having the best waves on the planet, it is so famous, the name itself creates mental images of giant iconic waves. This is one of the best places to watch the entire Vans Triple Crown of Surfing because of its close proximity to shore. At the end of this competition the winner of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is chosen as the person that has performed best across all three competitions. While you are here you should definitely make plans to see the North Shore and these amazing competitions. Make sure you bring sunscreen, binoculars and arrive early in the morning. Also, remember that Hawaii is the most beautiful place in the world and the most laid back place in the world, take your time, say “aloha” to everyone and enjoy yourself!
