Originally published on the Hawaii Blog

If you are going to be on the Hawaiian Islands on the night of the twentieth of December, you are in for a very special treat. Scientists are predicting that at around 8:32pm the moon will be noticeably entering a full lunar eclipse. This event occurs at various points around the world nearly once every six months, but this is the first time in three years that a complete eclipse will be visible, and Hawaii is going to have a front row seat.

Solar Eclipse

A lunar eclipse is fundamentally different than a solar eclipse. In a solar eclipse, the moon comes into the path of the sun, creating a view something like as follows:

Lunar Eclipse

The lunar eclipse occurs when the earth completely shadows out the moon, creating a scene like this:

What’s great about this kind of eclipse is we aren’t going to need to peek through a pin hole in a piece of paper to view it. Unlike solar eclipses, Lunar varieties are easy on the eyes (a fact that I imagine the nightly setting would have already keyed you into). The reddish tint that accompanies the lunar eclipse is actually a result of differentiation between the wavelengths of the various lights comprising the spectrum. Light waves toward the blue end of the spectrum are short and are blocked out completely by the eclipse, while the waves on the other end of the spectrum are longer and able to bend through, casting an eerie red glow over the moon.

Get Ready Hawaii!

The eclipse will actually begin at around 7:29pm, but won’t be very noticeable until around 8:30pm when the moon should be visible in the lower eastern night sky. During the maximum eclipse the moon ought to sit at about the halfway point in the eastern sky, and by the time it ends you can look for the moon to regain its familiar whitish hue directly above your head, or at its zenith.

The best time to observe this rare occurrence is going to be between 9:45pm and 10:50pm. Discover Hawaii Tours would be more than happy to take you and yours on a special nighttime adventure to a nice place to view this rare scene, but clouds might easily thwart both of our efforts. Lets all hope that the weather stays clear on that day so nothing get in the way of our viewing.

Originally published on the Hawaii Blog

Last week, Hotels in Hawaii saw occupancy rates rise to over seventy percent. This figure is great news for a Hawaiian economy that is struggling to recover after the recent economic disruption. In fact, this is a good sign for the entire American economy, as it demonstrates a revitalization of the travel industry, which means that people are starting to spend again.

The Hospitality Advisors LLC, report noted that the improved occupancy helped hotels across all of the Hawaiian Islands. Oahu leads the way with 80% of its hotel rooms occupied by happy vacationers, a nearly ten percent increase from the same time last year. Maui hotels saw the biggest boost. At 70% capacity the Valley Isle saw an eleven percent increase from the pervious week, and 14 percent from the same time last year. Kauai saw a year over year increase of ten percent, putting its hotels at nearly sixty percent full. Big Island Hotels are up eight percent from the pervious week and fourteen percent from the same time last year, thanks in part to discounted room rates of about 4%.

While this news is certainly great for the economy as a whole, the individual consumer might want to book their vacation soon before the economy really kicks back into gear. Once that happens, the laws of supply and demand will take hold, resulting in higher prices to accommodate the influx of visitors. From this same time last year, Island hotel rate averages are up nearly five percent. With the way things are going, next year should see a similar increase. Hopefully the growth of business will translate into better wages for everyone, and a better bottom line for the world budget.

Waikiki Beach

Still, as of now there are plenty of great deals to be found. Our partners at Pleasant Hawaiian Holliday’s are offering hotel and flight packages for all the major islands starting at $385 per person for Oahu. With that kind of savings, spending your holiday in Hawaii is even more enticing. Deals like this are popping up all over the web, and savvy shoppers can really score an amazingly discounted vacation if they do their homework.

Discover Hawaii Tours is maintaining our already low prices through the holidays, but the New Year might bring with it more than just hangovers and unfulfilled resolutions. To ensure that you and yours get the best deals possible make sure to book early.

Originally published on the Hawaii Blog

The world’s most active volcano just keeps going, and for the foreseeable future, it is showing no signs of letting up. May 21, 2010 is another event and milestone in the eruption of Kilauea. Since January 3, 1983, and for the 10,000th consecutive day, the summit of Kilauea has kept scientists busy collecting information and data about the volcano’s internal workings.

The ongoing eruption and gas emissions have produced a predominant mix of sulfur dioxide mixed with volcanic ash at about 200 tons to 2,000 tons a day. In the 27 plus years of activity, scientists have witnessed and investigated many events, including the opening of a new vent in March 2008. Possibly more important than the activity and information that has been gathered, and due to a road closure at Crater Rim Drive, there has been an increase in forest birds near the Chain of Craters Road intersection. The road closure is part of 4 miles out of 62 total miles of paved road through the park. Hawaiian traditions are also seeing benefits from the road closure as specific laws protecting Pele’s home are respected. Lava that steams is land that is still forming and not to be touched, according to cultural anthropologist Keola Awong. Scientists have also noticed signs showing just how connected the summit is to vents in other parts of the island. Tiltmeters, tubes a few feet high that are secured in the ground, contain liquid with an air bubble inside. These tiltmeters record how the air bubble shifts as the ground beneath the machine shifts.

The closest views of the lava can be seen from Tour 33 our tour gets as close to the lava viewing as allowed by the Hawaii Civil Defense. Tours are available from Big Island, Oahu, Maui, and Kauai.
