Hawaii PBS Premieres New Eddie Kamae Documentary

Documentary of Hawaii music to air next week. Legendary Hawaiian musician Eddie Kamae, best known as a founding member of the Sons of Hawaii musical group along with Gabby Pahinui, latest documentary film Those Who Came Beforewill air on PBS on Thursday, July 28 at 8:30 pm. Directed by Eddie and produced with his wife Myrna Kamae, the film follows Eddie’s journey of musical self-discovery. This journey morphed into a 50-year quest into uncovering the musical traditions of the islands.
The film, which premiered at the 2010 Hawaii International Film Festival, begins with Kamae looking into the songwriting of Queen Liliuokalani. Queen Liluokalani, the last Queen of Hawaii, was a prolific songwriter who composed over 160 songs during her lifetime. This research into Liliuokalani eventually led Kamae in search of deeper cultural knowledge, spurring Kamae to seek out noted Hawaiian cultural historians Mary Kawena Pukui, Pilahi Paki and Lilia “Mama” Hale. Through their wisdom and stories, Eddie begins piecing together the invaluable history of Hawaii’s musical heritage. Those Who Came Before represents the tenth film by Eddie and Myrna Kamae. All ten of the Kamae’s films are part of The Hawaiian Legacy Series. While Eddie Kamae is a distinguished documentary filmmaker, his first talent was as a ukulele virtuoso. Self-taught by playing along with the radio, Kamae’s prolific career began as one half of the Ukulele Rascals, the first professional act featuring all ukulele, where they performed at the famous Lau Yee Chai restaurant in Waikiki. However, Kamae rose to prominence in the sixties and seventies as a member of the Sons of Hawaii. Kamae’s storied career has seen the talented musician inducted into both the Ukulele Hall of Fame and the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame, amongst many other honors. If you can’t wait for the July 28 broadcast premiere of Those Who Came Before, you can catch an interview with Eddie and Myrna Kamae on July 26th on the PBS show Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox. Program airs 7:30 pm. All content, unless otherwise noted, is created by and for Discover Hawaii News, a wholly owned subsidiary of Discover Hawaii Tours. © 2011
