“Moon Mangoes” Wins Moonbeam Silver Medal Award
Lindy Shapiro, a Paia, Maui-based mother of two and author of the children’s picture book “Moon Mangoes” has been recognized with a Moonbeam Silver Medal Award in the Picture book category by Jenkins Group and Independent Publisher Online. The book was written by Lindy Shapiro with illustrations by Kathleen Peterson, and it was released in September of 2011. She currently lives in Maui and is a very busy mother, with a Masters Degree in Speech-language pathology. According to Sonia Isotov from Mauinow.com Shapiro “Fell upon the theme of her book as she was driving her children to art class one day and found herself bombarded with a slew of their worldly questions.” For some insight into the book we found a great review of it on Hawaii Book Blog. Mama and Anuenue are the characters found in “Moon Mangoes”, they are sitting on their lanai enjoying the evening under their big mango tree. Anu then begins, as children everywhere do, to ask questions. They start with “What if I ate up all those mangoes one by one and I got so full of them that I turned into a mango tree?” the string of creative questions continues along with the creative answers from Anuenue’s Mama until little Anu is fast asleep. Shapiro found inspiration for her new book through her own two children, and their persistent questions about the world surrounding them. In her timeless book she has captured the innocence and curiosity of children as well as the unwavering power of a mother’s love.
