History of the Festival
Each year, thousands of people in Hawaii and throughout the world travel to Hilo Town
on the Big Island
, where they embrace the authentic Hawaiian traditions and groundbreaking hula performances celebrated at the Merrie Monarch Festival.
Who is the Merrie Monarch? King David Kalakaua, Hawaii’s king from 1874 until his death in 1891.
Kalakaua’s passion for Hawaiian culture, arts, music, and dance earned him the nickname, Merrie Monarch. During his reign, Kalakaua revived the ancient art of hula, which had previously been banned 1830 by Queen Ka’ahumanu (she converted to Christianity and prohibited many ancient Hawaiian traditions during her reign).
The week-long Merrie Monarch Festival, founded in 1964, is held every April and features family activities, arts and crafts, free entertainment,a Miss Aloha Hula competition, and the main event: the Hula Kahiko and Hula Auana competitions.
Hula Kahiko and Hula Auana
Hula Kahiko features hula performances in their ancient, traditional form.
Hula Auana features modern hula performances, where hula halau (schools) push the boundaries of the definition of contemporary hula.
