Matson to add $52 charge for all Hawaii cargo transports
Matson of Hawaii, a subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, will charge $52 per shipping container beginning July 10, 2011. All cargo shipment containers moving both from and to Hawaii will be charged. The news of the fee comes after Governor Neil Abercrombie authorized the suspension of general excise tax exemptions for two years beginning July 1. Abercrombie signed the measure into law on June 9. Matson stated that the fee would help cover the cost of taxes that the company now faces. The company announced that it will review the fee amount every year to ensure the price is fair and relevant to their costs. Once the tax exemption is lifted in two years, Matson agreed to remove the $52 fee for its customers.
