Coastal Living Magazine named Lahaina, Maui, as one of America’s Top 15 Best Seaside Towns
—and for good reasons, as the magazine will reveal when it hits stand in June 2012.
“The charming gateway to Maui’s world-famous Kaanapali and Kapalua beach resorts to the north,” said Coastal Living Magazine in a recent announcement about the ranking. Lahaina may be the top Hawaii destination for travelers looking for seaside towns, but Maui is also home to a handful of well-known towns throughout the island, including Kahului, Wailuku, Paia Town
, Kihei, Hana
, and Kula Town
Coastal Living continued describing the beauty of Lahaina in their announcement, saying:
“Lahaina’s banyan trees add a courtly air to the downtown, and its brightly colored Front Street, busy with shops and galleries, keeps things lively. Lahaina has nearly perfect air quality, and when you add its dry, sunny climate in a tropical paradise, that makes life pretty ideal.”
How did Coastal Living decide its rankings?
The magazine’s editors weighed a number of factors in choosing the top 15 seaside towns in the United States. In addition to taking cues from Coastal Living’s top “dream towns” in the past, the editors also looked at the following:
- Nominations from Coastal Living social media followers
- Rankings from the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index
- Percentage of sunny and clear days
- Healthiness of beaches
- Average commute times
- A town’s walkability
- School and crime ratings
- Education and financial security of the locals
- Geographic diversity
- “Coastal vibe”
No other Hawaiian town
ranked in the top 15. Lahaina Town shares the spotlight with South Carolina’s Kiawah Island, Florida’s Naples, and Sausalito, California.
