Kona Surf Film Festival Hosted on Big Island
The Kona Surf Film Festival will be held on the Big Island December 2nd-3rd. Chad Campbell, along with friends and family, created the Kona Surf Film Festival in 2003 with hopes of bringing together the surfing community to enjoy what they love the most. The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows and Chad have partnered up, providing Chad with a wonderful venue for his event, the hotel also assists him with coordinating his charitable event. Now with over 30 sponsors it seems that Chad’s originally small, local festival has turned into a fixture on the Big Island; people come from across the world to show their films and participate in this annual event, which will be celebrating its’ 8th year this year. The event is held as a benefit for the Seathos Foundation, which promotes education and awareness of the human impact on the world’s oceans. This year organizers received a record number of submissions, as well as some big name sponsors. Campbell said “Kona Surf Film Festival is a chance for film makers to expose their work to a more mainstream audience that is psyched to share in the thrill of surfing outside of the water. These films are packed with beauty creativity, and awesome soundtracks.” This year’s event on Hawaii will include The Kona Surf Film Festival Awards which will be presented by Alaska Airlines and recognize standout films. The festival is constantly growing, and with big name sponsors and big name artists and surfers taking notice it will continue to grow. But festival organizer Chad Campbell included a hand-typed letter to the media in his press release packet including a statement about what is going on with the festival and his, and fellow organizers wishes to preserve their grass roots feel.
