How to Throw a Hawaiian-Style Summer Party

If there’s one thing that people who don’t live in Hawaii like to do, it’s throwing a Hawaii-themed party and pretending like they do live in Hawaii! Sounds fun, right? And there’s only a few things to remember when planning your summer get-together, Hawaiian-style.
Attire: Aloha Wear is essential. For guys, it’s the ubiquitous Hawaiian Shirt. For women, dress with floral patterns are perfect. Everyone should be wearing a lei, or garland, at the party. If you want everyone’s leis to match you should consider providing the leis. One more thing: slippers (sandals) are allowed! Music: It’s easy to ‘play something tropical’, but consider whether you want ‘tiki’ music like Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman, or more traditional Hawaiian sounds like the Kauhauanu Lake Trio or the Hawaiian Style Band. If you come across a Hawaiian music blog or website, be sure to download what they recommend.  Set the mood, there’s lots to choose from. Decor: Plastic plants and flowers might sound cheesy, but sometimes it’s hard to find a real-life palm tree and plumerias! Whether you can find living decor, do what you have to do to make sure there are beautiful flowers, patches of sand (if outdoors) and straw mats for people to relax on. Drinks: Cocktails cocktails! Hawaiian style cocktail recipes are easy to find online, so choose your favorites. Many recipes call for juice, too. Be sure to add extra decorations like mini umbrellas or sticks of sugar cane! Food: The most important element at any Hawaiian party. Hawaii’s local culture is known for cooking up tons of food at potlucks. Yes, potluck dining is the epitome of every Hawaiian-style gathering, so solicit your attendees to contribute their own Hawaiian dishes. If they’re clueless as to what to cook, recommend these:
  • Marinated, grilled meats
  • Fruits galore (papaya, mango, pineapple, coconut)
  • Spam musubi
  • Staples like white rice, mac salad, cole slaw
  • Kalua pig (pulled pork)
The only thing left is the warm summer sun, some tropical tradewinds and the Aloha Spirit! So smile, laugh, have fun and celebrate this summer, Hawaiian-style!
