Why a Hawaii volcano eruption?

You may be wondering, “Why are they featuring a Hawaii volcano eruption on the back of a quarter?” The answer is simple really. The Big Island of Hawaii is home to one of the most visited natural wonders of the world, Mount Kilauea. Located inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, it is the only place in the country where you can experience an active volcano.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is not only home to the world’s most active volcano, there are some amazing geological wonders to experience too! The eerie Thurston Lava Tubevolcanic steam vents, and views of volcanic activity from the Kilauea Crater Overlook.

The Hawaii volcano eruption quarter

The unveiling of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park edition of the “America the Beautiful Quarters” program is set for August 29, 2012. A United States Mint Ceremonial Release event will be going on at the park from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM and is open to the public.
The area of the park depicted on the quarter is known as the Kilauea east rift zone, and has been continually active since 1983. The volume of lava that has been spewed from this part of the volcano is so massive, you could have paved a road around the equator three times with it! And the island of Hawaii is much more than meets the eye. It tops out as the tallest mountain in the world at 33,476 feet when measured from the bottom of the sea floor.
