Experience Hawaii’s Best Farmer’s Market During Your Visit to Hilo
Considering all of the spectacular sights Hawaii offers, a farmer’s market may not be high on your list of essential stops — until you hear about the market in Hilo. At Discover Hawaii Tours, we encourage everyone visiting the Big Island to stop by this market, which is widely regarded as the best open market the Islands have to offer. You can always count on finding delicious Hawaiian foods, unique souvenirs, live music, and family-friendly fun.
Planning Your Visit
The Hilo Farmer’s Market is located in downtown Hilo on the corner of Mamo St. and Kamehameha Ave. Several nearby streets and lots offer free parking. You’ll see the best turnout if you visit on Wednesday or Saturday, when the market hosts more than 200 vendors from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. If those days don’t fit your schedule, the market is open every other day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Fresh Foods Worth Feasting On
Since its start in 1998 as a food market with four vendors, the market has expanded to offer exotic local Hawaiian foods to appeal to every visitor. Try specialty items like coconut pastries, honey, and Ohia jelly; savor fresh home-grown fruits, from favorites such as pineapple and papaya to exotics such as rambutan and longan; don’t forget about fresh-from-the-sea specialties such as ahi and uhu.
Other Offerings You Can’t Miss
Though the food should be enough to impress any visitor, Hilo’s market has much more to offer. You can find a great selection of souvenirs, such as puka shells, flower jewelry, and bongo drums. If you’re passionate about art, you’ll love the beautiful glasswork, vivid paintings, and masterful woodwork. If you need to recover from traveling, you can take advantage of healing services such as massages or energy rebalancing. Finally, if you have kids, visit Hilo on the first or third Saturday of the month, when kids enjoy free art activities at the Hopper’s Art & Uprising Booth.
