Escape Hawaii’s Congested Roads, Join a Tour Group

The Hawaiian Islands have lots of exciting attractions that draw thousands of tourists to its shores every day. Whether it’s beautiful beaches, amazing waterfalls, or historic locations, there is certainly no shortage of things to do here. In fact, the islands are covered from coast to coast with highly popular locations that cause a steady stream of both locals and visitors alike to flow across the island’s roads.
Because of these options, people in Hawaii are constantly on the move taking advantage of the vast opportunities present on our scenic island home. Unfortunately, these constant trips to the beach clog up Hawaii’s roads with surfers biking their way to a favorite break, wondering tourists behind the wheel of rental cars they are not used to, and many other traffic clogging commuters. This has caused Honolulu to be ranked above San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City, as the major US city with the longest average drive times in the US. This congestion causes driving time from point “a” to point “b” to be increased by 88% during peak congestion. For both locals and tourists, this extra time spent stuck in traffic is time spent missing out on enjoying the island. It’s no wonder that over 80% of Oahu residents report feeling “road rage” every single time they drive. With over forty-thousand drivers killed and Six-and-a-half million being hospitalized yearly, driving in congested roads such as this is truly a gamble. The “Doctor of Driving,” University of Hawaii professor Leon James, notes that speeding through this traffic is not only a great way to disturb the flow of the road miles behind you, but in the end it will only shave about ten percent off your driving time (assuming you don’t get pulled over).
James suggests slowing down, and enjoying your drive if possible. He touts the ability of friendly waves to help both you and all the other drivers to endure Hawaii’s traffic woes. If you are considering a visit to the islands any time soon, you might want to hold off on that rental car and leave the driving up to a professional tour guide. Their knowledge of the road and highly safe vehicles will literally lift you above any traffic annoyances that might have otherwise ruined, or at least delayed, your adventures.
