“The Pink Palace of the Pacific” is possibly the most recognizable hotels in Waikiki. Styled with Spanish and Moorish influence popular at the time, the pink paint was chosen based on an American obsession with pink of the era.
Today the Royal Hawaiian Hotel is one of the most popular hotels in Waikiki. One of the few with a private beachfront, the hotel boasts luxuries and amenities like no other in Waikiki!
The Royal Hawaiian Hotel has truly royal beginnings. Opening in 1927 with a black-tie gala event, the first registered guest was Princess Abagail Kawanakoa. The building of the hotel was inspired by the success of and luxury of the neighboring Moana Surfrider Hotel.
The Royal Hawaiian Hotel has always been a second home for American service members stationed in the Pacific.During world War II the hotel was closed to tourists and instead was used for R&R time for soldiers and sailors fighting in the Pacific Theatre.
In the late 1960′s troops in Vietnam would listen to “Concert By The Sea” which was a radio program on the Armed Forces Network. Broadcasting the sounds of home, troops would hear about the beautiful beaches of Hawaii and visit them while on R&R.
