Barges and tug boats carry goods into Molokai’s busiest port, the Kaunakakai Harbor. Ferry boats like the Molokai Princess arrive daily, bringing visitors and residents into Molokai’s most populated town, Kaunakakai Town, with a population of roughly 4,000. Popular activities at Kaunakakai Harbor include fishing, kayaking, and recreational boating.


Kaunakakai Harbor is designated as both a recreational and commercial harbor. This small boat harbor on Molokai’s southern coast is shared by the Department of Boating and Ocean Recreation as well as the Department of Transportation – Harbors Division.

In May 2012, the Department of Land and Natural Resouces announced plans to improve the harbor with a new covered passenger waiting area and a comfort station to aide commuter ferry users. At the time of the announcement, the estimated project cost was approximately $5 million would take up to one year to complete.
